Literary Focus:  Setting

What is Setting? 

The setting of a piece of literature is the time and place in which the story occurs. 

The definition of setting can also include social statuses, weather, historical period, and details about immediate surroundings.

Why Is Setting Important?

The setting of a story can play an important role in the development of the author's meaning. As such, it can ultimately serve the following functions: establishes mood (atmosphere), defines characters, develops the plot.
